Pilotage is compulsory in the area of water constituting the Port of Darwin that is south of Latitude 12 degrees 25 minutes south (Compulsory Pilotage Area) for ships 35 metres in overall length and greater, unless the master holds a valid Pilotage Exemption Certificate for that ship.

Mariners are warned that the damaged and submerged Starboard hand East Arm Channel beacon, which lies in position 12° 29.97’S 130° 53.18’E approximately 1½ cable South of South Shell Island, is a hazard to navigation.
